Queen Elizabeth and General Hartle, 1942 (Northern Ireland)

In December 1941, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Early in January 1942, General Hartle was honored by leading the first American forces to be sent overseas in World War II and landing in Belfast, North Ireland.

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of England [sic] came up to Belfast to review the American forces. This picture shows Queen Elizabeth and General Hartle riding in a jeep in Belfast.

King George and Queen Elizabeth presented to General Hartle their beautifully framed autographed pictures.

Queen Elizabeth, pictured here, was the mother of the current British monarch, Elizabeth II. She signed the photograph, "Elizabeth R. June 25th 1942.
