Herald and Torch Light, September 4, 1872

Confederate Dead — Several years ago the Legislature of this State made an appropriation of Five Thousand Dollars to gather up the bones of the rebel dead, buried on the field of Antietam and elsewhere in Western Maryland, and give them interment within some appropriate enclosure. The gentlemen having the matter in charge as a committee, a year or two ago, purchased a portion of the grounds of Rose-Hill Cemetery Company for the purpose, and last week the work of removal was commenced, the bones of quite a larger number having already been buried, but very few, if any, are known.
