Lefty and the principal, Valley High School
Click on the MEDIA ITEMS below for more information
Wanting the MVP trophy and the B'nai B'rith award to remain in the George’s Creek Valley, with his supporters from his home town area, he presented it to Valley High School in care of the late principal, Jack A. Petry (right), and under the custodianship of his friend and coach at Valley, John C. Meyers. It remained there, displayed in a showcase, until the school was renovated and was then transferred to a local bank for storage in their bank vault. When the library was built, the George’s Creek Promotion Council planned and financed a state-of-the-art showcase to display the trophy along with other memorabilia belonging to “Lefty” Grove. The late J. Suter Kegg, a
Cumberland Times-News
sports writer, was very helpful in this project since he covered the ceremony in which Lefty presented the trophy to the community.
"In 1955 Lefty said if he gave it to the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, none of the folks in 'Coney', which is what we call Lonaconing, would have a chance to see it. It was on display at Valley High School for almost two decades before it was removed for security reasons."
... from John Steadman,
Baltimore Sun
, Sept 22, 1996, quoting John Meyers.
