Robert Browning Garrett

One day in September, 1900, a correspondent for The Baltimore Sun, while a guest at the Deer Park Hotel, sent an article to his paper in which he wrote: —

"The comfortable and well-appointed folk who loaf luxuriously and cultivate the delights of an elegant ease and idleness on the porches of the hotel at Deer Park today may be regarded as in some sort the natural and inevitable outcome of a 'notion' that a plain man had fondly cherished in the glades and woods and by the mountain springs of Allegany county 64 years ago—a man who foregathered familiarly with the bear and the panther, the prowling wolf and the antlered buck; to whom the rattlesnake was but a diverting incident and the wild turkey or mountain trout a bright, brief joy in the intervals! of business.
