Dec. 19th 1863
On day before yesterday (Thursday) I butchered my four hogs after having then up one month. We had a very disagreeable day of it, raining & freezing
nearly all day. They were quite fat averaging 160 ½ lbs. On yesterday a week Mr. Gabrill Edmonson came to my house; having escaped from fort Mchenry about a week before. He had been in the southern army about two years when the yankees captured him and put him in the fort. He was captured on the 15th of November last, made his escape on the 6th inst. He was taken quite sick night before last but is now convalescent
I lost my pet lamb Tiny some time since. The weather has set in very cold today.

Jan. 5th 1864
On the 24th Dec. last my Mollie, my two boys & sis Maxwell & myself went to Fredk. Co. & found our friends well. Though the diptheria had taken off many of the neighbors they have escaped so far. We returned on thursday following On Wednesday I went to Rockville to meet the Board. Thursday was a very rainy day.

Friday Jan. 1st
the weather is very cold.
Edmondson’s mother & sister came up & had an interview with him in the hollowdays. He left on tuesday the 29th ult.
My sow & 9 pigs after having been gone about a week returned yesterday except 2 pigs. Yesterday snow fell to the depth of 6 or 7 in. Jimmie Maxwell & Holland Beall came down of saturday last & commenced school yesterday. Hollie has been sick today.

Mar. 5th 1864
John Trout came down on the 4th of Febr. & commenced work on the 5th
