Belle Plains, Va.
March 11, 1863

My Dear Colonel.
After a most terrible march of five days, through mud & rain & snow, with drenched clothes & lodging on the soaked ground, with my command, I reached this place about 3 o'clock this P.M.

I shall take command of the regiment tomorrow morning. I am in the 2nd Div. 3rd Brigade of Cavalry, Army of the Potomac. Major Gen. Greggs [sic], who commands the Div. is absent on furlough. Col. Voss commands the Div. in his absence & my Col. (Kielmansegg[e]) commands this brigade. There is not one brigadier general in this whole division. I wish there was. I don't much fancy these Col's acting brigadiers.
