May 28 1862 - Intense feeling after Front Royal battle

Intense Feeling.--

For three days the excitement and indignation among the Union people of this town have been unparalleled. This state of feeling has been caused by the alleged exultation of the Tories in our midst over the butchery of our brave Maryland boys at Front Royal, and was entirely beyond the control of conservative councils. It is needless to say that we do not justify acts of violence, but men cannot be permitted to live under and enjoy the favors of a Government who chuckle over the reverses of its armies. Toryism must go under, or Unionism will. It is useless at a time like this to argue, or multiply words with rebels, and we do not mean to do so. The lines are broadly and distinctly drawn between patriots and traitors. The latter must be coerced into entire and complete silence, or make up their minds to leave. If the Government is to be maintained, they cannot be permitted to disseminate the seeds of disloyalty or ventilate their hatred of the Union under assumed names or false garbs. Forbearance has ceased to be a virtue, and we are advised that the most rigorous measures will be adopted against traitors of every grade
