Slavery Is Abolished In Washington

Last week the President affixed his signature to the bill abolishing slavery in the District of Columbia In doing this, he has disappointed a large number of his devoted Union friends in the Border States, but these should remember that no such bill could have passed either House of Congress nor could slavery have been interfered with in any way if the representatives of the Southern States had not blindly, madly and wickedly left their seats in that body a year ago.

A correspondent wishes to know how Ex-Gov. Thomas, our representative in Congress, voted on the measure? He voted against it, as did all the Border States representatives who were present when the vote was taken. We caution our Union friends in every part of this county, however much some of them may regret the enactment of this measure, to beware of the denunciations of it by those whose hearts are now, as they have ever been, wholly devoted to the rebel cause and who are ready to seize upon every circumstance that may transpire in the progress of the war to alienate the affections of the people from the General Government, and thus pave the way for ultimate Secession. Let them remember that this would be the worst of all calamities and that to avoid it they must stand by the old flag as long as there is a star or stripe left upon its folds.
