Three Sportswomen of Maplehurst Country Club, Frostburg

The Maplehurst Country Club in Frostburg was opened in 1956. These three club members are emblematic of the club's rich history of sportswomen since the club's founding.

Shirley Yvonne Mills Workman (1932-2011), was born in nearby Keyser, West Virginia and received her undergraduate degree in Primary Elementary Education from Frostburg State College. She later earned a Master's Degree from West Virginia University. Shirley had taught school in Allegany County for seventeen years. Shirley excelled in tennis and at the age of 55 enrolled at Allegany Community College where she remained undefeated at No. 1 singles during two regular seasons. Active in the Fort Lauderdale tennis community, Shirley was ranked 11th in Florida for her age group. In the August 27, 1990 issue of Sports Illustrated, Shirley was profiled in the "Faces In The Crowd" section as follows, "Shirley Workman, Cumberland Md., Workman, 58, a former student at Allegany Community College, finished the regular season undefeated in 11 tennis matches at the No. 1 singles position. In postseason play she reached the regional finals in both singles and doubles."

Betty Ann Hanna (1932-2012), was a graduate of Beall High School and Frostburg State University. She would also go on to teach at Bruce High School in Westernport as well as Beall High School in Frostburg. Betty was a member of the Women's Golf Association and is recognized as having won the most women's club championships in the history of the Maplehurst Country Club.

Anna Drucilla "Dru" Schriner (1926-2012), was born in Frostburg, a 1944 graduate of Beall High School and a graduate of Frostburg State Teachers College. She would also later teach at Beall High. Dru was a founding member of the Maplehurst Country Club and for many years assisted with the Vicki Via Dotson Leukemia Celebrity Golf Tournament held at Maplehurst.
