April 1864 - Ladies festival for Sanitary Commission

Ladies’ Festival.

The festival held by the ladies last week for the benefit of the Sanitary Commissions was quite a success, the amount cleared being $321.99 Considering the short time it was open, being but two days and evenings. We think the amount realized creditable to the liberality of our local citizens. In connection with the Festival the Fancy Goods which have been gotten up by this society were exhibited, and though there was no exertion made to dispose of them they being intended for the county table at the Baltimore Fair -yet $128.25 was realized from these goods. The goods finished and packed to send to Baltimore amounted to $378.00 with the work on hand to be made up, it is expected that the contribution from this District will reach One Thousand Dollars. The ladies in the other districts of the County are all at work for the same object, and we think the donation from Washington County will be second to none in the State. Our loyal citizens have done nobly in this cause, giving freely of their money and labor, and not withstanding this fund is intended alike for the relief of rebel soldiers as well as our own, we understand it has no [?] or encouragement from the friends of rebel soldiers. It has always been a principle with Union people to relieve the suffering wherever found - be they friend or foe and it has faithfully been carried out during this war, as can be attested by scores whose wants have been attended to in the hospitals in our midst. There is still an opportunity offered to such as wish to contribute to this charitable object, and donations sent to any of the ladies of the society will be thankfully received and properly credited. One of the largest armies of modern times will be operating in the field during the summer, and with such a force scattered over regions to the men are unaccustomed, must necessarily carry along with it a large [?] of sickness, suffering and death to say nothing of the horrors of the battlefield It is our duty to relieve these sufferings as far as we can, and it behooves our good citizens to lend a helping hand. The ladies who have been engaged in getting up these donations deserve great credit; they have worked faithfully and with great perseverance, and labors have not been in vain. Something more can be done, therefore let every one assist them, so that our County may show to our brave soldiers that they have her warmest sympathies.
