(Title and first two lines illegible)

…by the announcement that the Rebels have defeated our forces in the vicinity of Martinsburg, and were advancing in this direction, bringing with them an immense train of wagons and pontoons. Later intelligence reported them at Hainesville, with their picket lines extending to the Potomac.

It appears that early on Sabbath morning, a Brigade of our cavalry, composed of the 14th and 22nd Pennsylvania and the 8th Ohio regiments, under command of Col. Schoonmaker were attacked by a heavy force of Rebel cavalry, infantry and artillery, South of Martinsburg on the Winchester road. The vigilant and intrepid Col. Schoonmaker was not found unprepared for his adversary. His command were armed with the Spencer Rifle and dealt terrible destruction in the ranks of the Rebels. Their infantry made several unsuccessful charges to dislodge our troops from their position, and it was only when they brought up their artillery to bear upon our forces that they yielded their ground to the enemy, and fell back toward Harper’s Ferry. The rebels occupied Martinsburg and subsequently advanced as far as Hainesville, but on Sunday night fell back beyond Martinsburg. Early on Monday, our troops followed in pursuit, and as heavy firing was heard in the direction of Bunker Hill, it is supposed that another engagement took place.
