Sad Occurrence.

A friend, on Tuesday last gave us the details of a sad and heart-rending occurrence which took place near the village of Tilghmanton on Saturday last. The Federal troops have a number of Dispatch stations between this place and Harper’s Ferry. One of the posts is at the Barn of Joseph Palmer, in the immediate vicinity of Tilghmanton. Two of the couriers were at the barn on Saturday last, and while there one of them laid down his gun(a seven shooter Spencer rifle, which is also a self capper,) _____ and stepped out a moment.

(Several lines in the original are illegible.)

…two small lads, sons of Mr. Palmer, aged respectively 9 and 11 years, entered the barn, one of whom picked up the rifle and commenced examining it.— Whilst so engaged, the soldier stepped in and requested the boy to lay the gun down as it was dangerous for him to handle it. In complying with this request, the lock struck the floor and the rifle was discharged, the ball passing through the bowels of both the boys, instantly killing the eldest one. The youngest in great pain, survived forty-eight hours, when the wound proved fatal. What a warning this is for parents to be more careful in allowing children to tamper with fire arms.— Such fatalities are sad indeed and should be a warning for both old and young.—Mail.
