April 26 1865 - Day of Sorrow

Day of Sorrow.—

Wednesday last, in accordance with the recommendation of the Ast. Secretary of State, was observed by our citizens in a manner which showed the heart felt sorrow that each one feels for the lamented dead. The places of business were all closed, the flags were at half-mast and looped up with crape, and all the public, and nearly all the private houses were draped in mourning.— The scene was peculiarly solemn and oppressive. As one passes a house, with a loop of crape on the door he instinctively treads softly lest the noisy fall of his footsteps may disturb the sacred grief of the household.— Here was the habiliments of mourning on every door, and sad and sorrowing hearts within. It is scarcely a figure of speech to say that every house contained a corpse. Not in reality, of course, but the grief was as great, the tears as bitter, as if the inanimate body of a beloved friend was awaiting the last sad rites, in every home.

We were glad to notice that for once, the rancorous feeling of party spirit was swallowed up, and that those of our citizens whose party prejudices have been against us, united in paying respect to the illustrious dead.— We have no reason to suppose their grief was not genuine. Services were held in all the churches, which were well attended. We have tolerably full reports from the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches, but were unable to send reporters to the others. We should have been glad to have given a short synopsis of the proceedings in all of them.
