Susan Marie Jones (1942-)
Susan M. Jones, a Democrat, is the first African-American, man or woman, to be elected to Allegany County-wide office.
This was in 1990 when she was elected as a Judge to the Allegany County Orphan's Court. Jones served in this capacity from 1991-1995.
Born and raised in Cumberland, Susan Jones lived on Carroll Street on Cumberland's West Side. This was a predominantly white area. She recalls playing with the white children of the neighborhood and never having a problem with racial discrimination. Jones attended the Carver School from first to third grade, and then moved to Pennsylvania where she attended a public school. After high school, Jones married and worked at variety of jobs.
