Body

The attached document was transcribed from The Cumberland Alleganian & Daily Times, a newspaper of Cumberland, Md., for the year 1876. The newspaper account provides insight into life on the Canal in 1876, even though every edition of the newspaper was not found, and of those which were found, not all included an article on the Canal or information on canal traffic. This is a companion document to: "Canal Trade 1876" which was transcribed from the same newspaper.

The use of [brackets] indicates something this editor added to the text for clarity or consistency.

Users who search the newspaper transcriptions Canal Trade 1876, will find some variations in spelling. Every effort was made to reconcile the spellings; although not all variations in spellings were reconciled. The name of the captain is spelled out as fully as possible, though researchers should use caution as there are numerous Captains Little, Hassett, Cowden among other local names.
