Marie Arbutus Carter, 81, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Cumberland, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997, at her daughter's residence after a lengthy illness.

Born Nov. 15, 1915, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late James A. Courtney and Georgia Etta Gordon. She also was preceded in death by one sister, Elizabeth Holley; and a grandson she loved and cherished, James Allen Courtney. Mrs. Carter attended the public elementary schools and the Carver High School in Cumberland. She was baptized at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Cumberland. She enjoyed working and spent many hours at Grants and Rosenbaums Department Stores, and worked many years at the Fort Cumberland Hotel. She later retired from Eyerlys Department Store. On her days off, she loved socializing with her very close friends.

Mrs. Carter married William A. Carter in 1940 and was the mother of two children. She devoted her time to family and always looked forward to the time she could spend with her daughter and grandchildren. She moved to Pittsburgh in October, 1996, to live with her daughter. Surviving are one son, James A. Courtney and wife Mary, Cumberland; one daughter, Wilma A. Buford, Pittsburgh; five grandchildren, Gina Loraine Courtney, Wendy Leah Armstrong, Shawn Douglas Courtney, Stephanie Marie Buford, and Staci Denise Buford; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Friends will be received at the Leasure-Stein Funeral Home, 230 Baltimore Avenue, Cumberland, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. only. Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. David Coleman officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
