CUMBERLAND
Robert B. Gates, 90, Cumberland died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002 at the Allegany County Nursing Home.

Born Sept. 25, 1911, at Patterson Creek, W.Va., he was the son of the late Edward L. and Helen (Redman) Gates. He was also preceded in death by four brothers Edward E., Lawrence, Elmore, and Fred Gates. For many years, Mr. Gates was employed by the S.T. Little Jewelry Store and later at Fort Cumberland Hotel.

He was a nature lover and his special interest were fishing and gardening. He had resided in the same Greene Street home for 82 years, before entering the nursing home a year ago. Daily from his front porch he engaged friends, neighbors and passersby in conversation about current and past events. He had a wealth of information about Allegany County and was especially knowledgeable about Cumberland history.

Surviving are one brother, Henry L. Gates Sr., Lexington, Mass., and one sister, Helen Gates Stephens, Cumberland; three nieces, Jane P. Gates, Dolores Thomas and Betty Stephens, Cumberland; two nephews, Paul Gates, Wayne, N.J., and Henry L. Gates Jr., Cambridge Mass.; and numerous great nephews and nieces.

At Mr. Gates request his body has been donated to Maryland Anatomy Board. He also requested that there be no funeral service.
