Susan E. (Redman) Mitchell, of Keyser, went to be with her Lord on Oct. 25, 2007, at WMHS-Memorial Campus.

Born Aug. 21, 1926, in Keyser, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Harry Keys and Ira M. (Washington) Keys. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Arnold Redman, and her second husband, George H. Mitchell. Also preceding her in death is a daughter, Eurith A. (Redman) Phillips; four sisters, Eurith Keys (infant), Elton Johnson, Nitra "June" Alexander and Blanche Campbell; one brother, Clarence E. Keys, a grandson, Leslie Bruce and a daughter, Kay Mitchell-Becker. A lifelong member of Janes United Methodist Church, Keyser, she loved her church and was always a very active member, presently serving on the Administrative Council, past chairperson of the Worship Committee, Stewardship Committee, Pastor Parish Relations Committee and past trustee. Susan had a beautiful soprano voice and used this gift as a member of the choir for many years. Her singing at Janes began as a young woman in the gospel choir under the direction of Mrs. Mary Moore. She was very active in United Methodist Women serving as treasurer, Black Methodists for Church Renewal, and Church Women United. She was a fifty-four year member of Washington-Smith Unit Auxiliary 152 and presently serving as Second Vice-president and Historian and was also a past president. Susan had a special love for the mentally challenged and exemplified that love through her dedication as a former employee of both the Developmental Center and Cornell Street Group Home in Keyser.

She was most proud to have been a member of the Lincoln Street Playground Association in the early fifties. That group was instrumental in obtaining a much improved play lot for the Negro children. Surviving are her children, Sylvia L. Bruce and husband Ernest, of Columbus, Ohio, Patty J. Redman, of Keyser, Arnold M. Redman and wife Ruth, of Piedmont and Harry E. Redman and wife Bernice, of Cumberland, George H. Mitchell II and wife Agnetta and daughter Monlieth Mitchell, of South Carolina; brothers Harry O. Keys and wife Teresa, and David A. Keys and wife Joretta, both of Columbus, Ohio; sisters Myra B. Perry, of Columbus, Ohio and Thelma K. Stewart, of Morgantown, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, a very special aunt, Emma McDonald, of Texas; a host of friends and a very special family whom she loved and who loved her, Dr. Carl and Jane Liebig and their children.

Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. William A. Linhart and the Rev. Alfred Deas officiating. Susan request that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name to Janes United Methodist Church, Church Street, Keyser, W.Va.
