Construction of Dams.
The Canal Company have determined to build new dams at or near the sites of Dams No. 4 and 5, as soon as arrangements can be made for the purpose. It is said that the contract for the construction of Dam No. 4 has already been given out to Messrs. HUMERID and ROBISON, of Martinsburg, the latter gentlemen being the editor of an unscrupulous Democratic paper published in that town.
We have heard it bruted about in certain political circles, that it is the fixed purpose of the Democratic leaders to employ as many Irish as can be obtained from other counties upon this work, prior to the first of April next, in order that they may attain the semblance of a residence, to vote the Democratic ticket at the next election. The object is to overcome the American majority in this county by the introduction of two or three hundred Irishman, who will be here to-day and gone to-morrow, and who have not a single interest in common with our people. The Locos are chuckling over the possible consummation of this arrangement, but they will find the Americans of Old Washington not so easily put down by these foreign votes as they may imagine. They will stand like the noble band of Spartans at the celebrated pass of Thermopylae, and never yield while there is a man left to face the foe.
