Ecumenical service seeks unity for one human kind

CUMBERLAND — Unity was the theme of Sunday's ecumenical service at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Oldtown Road. The service was part of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity and to honor Martin Luther King Jr., who was mentioned in prayers and speeches during the ceremony.
A service for Martin Luther King Day will be conducted today at 5 p.m. in Metropolitan A.M. E. Church., Frederick and Decatur St.

A Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at Grace United Methodist Church drew an enthusiastic crowd on Sunday evening.
About 70 people gathered in the Keyser church to pay tribute to the slain civil rights leader.

Musical being shown as part of observance

CUMBERLAND — Black History Month will be the focus as the New Embassy Theatre, 49 Baltimore St., shows the 1943 musical classic Cabin in the Sky, beginning Thursday.
The MGM film stars Lena Horne, Ethel Waters, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, and contains music and lyrics written by, among others, Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, according to Mark Baker, director of the Embassy.
BLACK HISTORY CAME TO LIFE recently at Garrett College, where students and staff presented "Still I Rise...," a Black History Month program of monologues of important figures from our nation's past and present. Among those profiled were Rosa Parks, Corretta Scott King and Martin Luther King Jr., Amy Jacques Garvey, Wanagari Maathai, Cynthia Cooper, Wilt Chamberlain, Tyra Banks, Alice Walker, Maya Angelou, and Carter G. Woodson.
SOJOURNER TRUTH VISITS WITH 8TH GRADERS
Alice McGill, a portrayer of the famed Sojourner Truth, a 19th-century freed slave who fought for emancipation, presented the culminating event in a study series for a number of Garrett County eighth graders last week. Students in the classes of Elizabeth Gilbert's class at Swan Meadow, Sharon Settle's classes at Northern Middle School, and Gary Thompson's classes at Southern Middle School all read the novel Sojourner Truth: Ain't I a Woman? written by Patricia and Frederick McKissack.
Ebenezer hosts black history program

CUMBERLAND — The parishioners at Ebenezer Fall Gospel Baptist Church, Cumberland, gathered recently for a Commemorative Black History Month Celebration and Census 2000 program. The church choir and pastor were dressed in African garb and the colors and designs reflected the history and heritage of African-Americans.
