Body

Depicted at the very top of this circa 1956 Fort Hill High School basketball team photograph is John Wesley Wormack. As a Junior, John was the only black on the varsity Fort Hill High School football team. This was out of 35 players, plus coaches and managers. As seen here he is the only black depicted on the varsity basketball team as well. This would make him one of the first, if not the first black to play these two varsity sports at Fort Hill. The 1956 Sabre did not depict any blacks on the varsity baseball or track teams.

On the far left is Richard "Baldy" Powell, in the middle is Gary Shook, and on the right is Gary Frisby. Though the date is not identified, Gary Shook and Gary Frisby were in the class of 1959, while Richard "Baldy" Powell graduated in 1960. The photo was probably taken during the 1958-1959 school year.

— CUMBERLAND - Former Fort Hill High School standout Mike Page has always worked hard and he says he learned to take that work ethic to another level after earning a spot on the West Virginia University football team as a walk-on.

The former All-State football player and track star will be challenging the members of the Bishop Walsh football team to work hard and reach beyond what they think their capabilities may be.
Page was announced as the Spartans' new head coach on Monday, succeeding Paul Miller. There were 14 candidates for the post.
