The following document was transcribed from U. S. Census Reports for Maryland, Allegany County, Cumberland, and Enumeration District No. 3, Census pages 25 - 32, enumerated on June 10 - 14, 1880 by Samuel M. Haller.

All the original material was handwritten in a flowing script font of the day. That means it was occasionally hard to decipher. Readers who have alternate spellings are requested to contact William Bauman who transcribed the documents at wdbauman@visuallink.com and he will endeavor to verify/correct this file.

The Alleganian, a Cumberland newspaper, during the 1878 time period included a regular feature - The Canal Trade. William Bauman has transcribed these articles. Until the boating season began the articles deal mostly with the political events affecting the canal, but in April the news included captains, cargo, freshets and all matters relating to the canal trade.

This ledger contains the boats registered in January, 1878.

The list of captains and owners includes women and African Americans. William Bauman who transcribed the list noted that by the time the boating season got underway, the boat captain listed in the Boat Register created Jan 1, 1878, was not necessarily the boat captain listed later in The Alleganian, the Cumberland newspaper.

As Unrau noted:

Canal trade, 1876

This compilation of newspaper articles about the C. & O. Canal is one of a series. The Cumberland newspaper was found on microfilm at Frostburg State University, Frostburg, MD and at Allegany College of Maryland, Cumberland, MD. I did not include newspaper editorials because those were opinion pieces. The report does offer a glimpse of life on the Canal in 1876.

The attached document was transcribed from The Cumberland Alleganian & Daily Times, a newspaper of Cumberland, Md., for the year 1876. The newspaper account provides insight into life on the Canal in 1876, even though every edition of the newspaper was not found, and of those which were found, not all included an article on the Canal or information on canal traffic. This is a companion document to: "Canal Trade 1876" which was transcribed from the same newspaper.
