              NEGRO EQUALITY!
Among the slang utterances of the Copperheads is the charge that the friends of emancipation in Maryland are in favor of a social and political equality of the white and black races. This is utterly false. No such emancipation exists in the Free States and none will ever exist in this state. It is slavery and not freedom which has placed a white laboring man upon a social equality with the negro. No white man or white woman who has to labor for his or her daily bread, is respected by the Aristocratic Slaveholders either here or in the farther South. This is the effect of slavery everywhere, and the sooner poor men learn this indisputable truth, the better it will be for their welfare.
