Fifteen women have been elected to the Allegany County Board of Education since 1974 when it changed from an appointed to an elected position.

Sara-Beth Bittinger was appointed by Governor Martin O'Malley on February 18, 2010 to fill the vacancy on the Allegany County Board of Education left by the passing of C. Fred Sloan. She was a candidate in the 2010 election for a seat on the Board of Education and was the top vote-getter in the November 2, 2010 General Election. In late 2017 Bittinger announced she would not be running for re-election in 2018.
