The following as per Bill rendered, filed in Treasurer's Office, and certified to by John Shay viz:

1872 May 20th       
22''00 feet of lumber at $1.14 cts per hundred
for cribing at Gard Lock No. 4. $25.08


I certify that the above account is correct; that the items therein were duly authorized and contracted for on favorable terms and have been received, for the use and benefit of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company and is herby approved.

Notes

A Charles Whiting was listed in the 1870 census from Opequon, Berkeley, West Virginia as a farmer with real estate valued at $4350. If this is the same man, the fact that a local farmer provided the lumber for the repair of the lock shows that the Canal Company used local materials.
