Every place in the neighborhood of the Potomac presents some features of the military occupation of the country. The quiet old Canal is occupied for almost its whole length by the tents and bush houses of the pickets, and its barges and boats are filled with soldiers ammunition and commissary stores. The scenery of this Canal is grand and beautiful from Washington to Harper’s ferry, and further. In many places the tow path rises sheer 60 feet from the turbulent channel of the river, the Canal itself winding round rugged and precipitous cliffs of limestone and red sandstone, thickly clothed with woods. Here and there it assumes quite a Dutch aspect, where luxuriant meadows are requisite to its precipitate descent, and throughout its whole course it is full of the picturesque and romantic.
