A. D. McCardell, of this place, and brother of the senior editor of the Leader, believes that he is the oldest boatman now following the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. He made his first trip on the flour boat Benjamin Franklin, with David Hoover, captain, Theodore Embrey, bowsman, his brother, Charles, towboy and himself steward and cook or “slush,” just as the captain was in humor to term him, and while away from home on this memorable voyage the editor was born. He also declares that if any others aspire to this distinguished honor, data will be given even at the risk of ruining the matrimonial prospects of the editor. He says he never made any money for himself, but has largely contributed towards enriching many boat builders, mule drivers and coal dealers, and put many thousands in the pockets of the “old canal ring.” He now demands a pension, and says were it a Republican administration he believes he would get it.— Williamsport Leader.
