Heavy Rain—Freshet.

On Saturday evening last, Rain commenced falling in this section of country, and continued with scarcely any intermission until Monday night. On Monday the Potomac river rose above its common level a great many feet, covering the Aqueduct and overflowing everything near its banks at Williamsport. A great many persons of this town went to Williamsport on Monday and Tuesday, and on their return they represented the river to have been higher than it was ever known to have been at any former period. Car loads of Flour, stacks of Grain, Shantees, Trees, Logs and Timber were seen whirling through the angry waters in rapid succession. The damage must necessarily be very great, and it is feared the Canal may be seriously impaired by this freshet. All communication between the Virginia side having of course been suspended, the Mail could not be passed over and had to be returned to Hagers-Town on Monday. At present, Tuesday morning 10 o'clock, the sky looks lowering, the indications being decidedly for more rain.
