Chesapeake & Ohio Canal.

During the recent spell of dry weather, navigation upon the Canal, owing to the low state of water, was partially suspended. The Cumberland Civilian says the difficulty arises from the badly constructed dam, called Dam No 5, located near Hancock, which leaks to such an extent that it is impossible to get a sufficient quantity of water into the Canal at that point.

Correspondent of the last News thus refers to Hancock, its improvements, scenery - &c-

Upon approaching the ancient-looking place from the east, all cannot but admire the scenery—the mountains, river, canal, and often the swift passing locomotive with her long trains and shrill whistle: all, when combined, give a grandeur not easily surpassed. Guano is doing wonders to the soil in and about this place, of which the luxuriant fields of wheat is abundant evidence, and adds a great charm to the scenery.

The Ferry Hill property was purchased by the National Park Service in 1974 to become a unit of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. The site was established as the headquarters for the park in 1980. During 2002, the park headquarters were moved from Ferry Hill to Hagerstown, Maryland. Planning for more intensive use of the Ferry Hill property as an interpretive site led to the need for a comprehensive understanding of the historic landscape, and the preparation of this Cultural Landscape Report (CLR).
