Garrett County’s Suffrage Pilgrimage
On Saturday October 26, 2019 an unveiling took place at the Garrett County Courthouse in Oakland, Maryland of a State Highway Administration/Maryland Historical Trust highway marker. The marker, once permanently placed, will commemorate an historic march that took place in Garrett County during the summer of 1914 in support of the Women’s Suffrage Movement.
The marker reads:
CUMBERLAND — The color purple is often associated with royalty.
It’s also Western Maryland Food Bank Executive Director Diana Loar’s favorite color.
And by the sound of co-workers and friends who attended a retirement celebration in her honor on Thursday, it was clear many think of Loar as royalty.
“I think we’re losing a great lady,” said Chuck Koelker, the food bank’s board of directors president.
“When you think of the food bank, you think of Diana Loar.”

Antis Plan Campaign to Offset Invasion of Hikers
Invasion Of County Now Planned By Opposition To Suffrage.
The Maryland Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage at Baltimore has received a number of requests for literature and information regarding the work from various parts of the state, and also requests for meetings to be held and speakers to be sent to increase the interest of those who are opposed to the enfranchisement of the women of Maryland.
RESUME OF COUNTY CAMPAIGN.
Compilication of Expenditures and Results of Suffrage Campaign In Garrett County.
A campaign may be rich in the propagation of suffrage ideas; it may be inspiring to the participants; but unless it increases the strength of the organization by enrolling members and gaining chairmen of election districts, its value is indefinite.
SUFFRAGISTS “HIKE” THROUGH THE COUNTY.
Great Success. Eight Hundred and Twenty New Members Enrolled.
With evidence that Old Sol accompanied them on their hike through Garrett county, the band of hiking suffragists arrived in Cumberland Sunday, where they planned a similar hike for Allegany county starting August 1. The speakers will be accompanied on their hike through that county by a dozen or more members of the Just Government League of Allegany county.
Morgantown Suffragists Organize.
Ably assisted by Dr. Harriet B. Jones, of Wheeling, 20 of the more prominent women of Morgantown, W. Va., met and organized a political equality club, which will have for its purpose the placing of a law on the statute books giving the women of West Virginia the right of suffrage.
The ladies intend to inaugurate a state-wide campaign at once and will attempt to organize a club in every city. After this is accomplished the first state convention will be held the date and place to be decided later.
