WOMEN’S HISTORY CELEBRATION, 2019: Held at Allegany College of Maryland on April 8, 2019

The theme for this eighth annual celebration was “Honoring Women of Peace and Nonviolence.” The event was sponsored by the Allegany County Women’s Action Coalition and the Maryland National Organization for Women with support from the Allegany County Commission for Women and NAACP #7007.

Fifth Annual Allegany County Women's History Celebration

The Fifth Annual Allegany County Women's History Celebration was held on March 15, 2016. The event was sponsored by the Maryland National Organization for Women and Allegany College of Maryland. Over 100 people were in attendance at the event. The program focused on women leaders and consisted of a:

1. Panel discussion entitled, "What We Do and How We Got Here: Public Service as a Career"
2. Special presentation to Julianna Albowicz honoring her retirement as Assistant to Senator Barbara Mikulski

The Fourth Annual Allegany County Women's History Month Celebration was held on March 24, 2015. The event theme, “STEM and Beyond: Exploring the Possibilities", celebrated accomplished women of the past as they encourage today’s young women toward careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Sponsored by several departments and groups at Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) and the Maryland National Organization for Women (NOW), attendees had the opportunity to tour the building’s classrooms and laboratories and to view exhibits and displays relating to STEM.

Women's History Celebration

Maryland NOW and Allegany College of Maryland presented the Third Annual Women's History Celebration & Networking Event "Women Leaders - Past and Present" on March 31, 2014 in Cumberland, Maryland.

Women officials and leaders from Allegany and Garrett Counties were recognized and a portion of the program for them was reserved to share a bit about their duties and career paths to the attendees who might like to choose public service as a career choice.

Women's History Celebration - Women Leaders, Past & Present

Sandra K. Wilt - Lonaconing Town Councilwoman

The town of Lonaconing was incorporated in 1890. Sandra K. Wilt is a long-term member of the Lonaconing Town Council, having served in that office from June 1989 to the present, a total of 21 years thus far. She currently holds the position of Police Commissioner on the town council and at this writing is about half-way through her current two-year elected term of office which expires in 2013.

Town of Midland Councilwomen

The town of Midland was officially incorporated in 1900. The first woman elected to the Town Council was Elaine Miller who served from 1974-1976. Four other women have since been elected to the Midland Town Council. These include Beatrice Muir (1980-1982) and Paula James (1990-1996). Nellie R. Tighe was elected to the Midland Town Council in 1998, and Camille Alexander in 2000. At the conclusion of their four-year term (2008-2012), Tighe was re-elected to the council for an additional four years, while Alexander chose not to run for re-election.
