Margareta "Jaye" (Rönnersten) Miller, 1944-2017

The following obituary is excerpted from the Cumberland Times-News, April 16, 2017. It pertains to the prominent local businesswoman, Jaye Miller:

CUMBERLAND — Margareta "Jaye" (Rönnersten) Miller, 73, of Cumberland, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2017.
Jaye was born on March 2, 1944, and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. She became interested in cooking at a very young age. She and her mother would spend their Saturday afternoons planning and preparing the family's evening dinner.

Margaret R. “Peggy” Melotti

Melotti was a pioneer in meeting certain needs and providing services to local veterans and women. The photograph as well as the following is excerpted from an obituary from the Adams Family Funeral Home of Cumberland, Maryland website:

Michele Martz, UPMC W.Md. President

In October 2020 Michele Martz, CPA, FACHE was named as the new president of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Western Maryland (UPMC Western Maryland.) Her appointment will become official effective January 1, 2021.

Martz has served in an executive capacity for 18 years with the Western Maryland Health System and now UPMC Western Maryland. Her current position is as senior vice-president and chief financial officer. Prior to that she served as vice-president of both Physician Enterprises and Financial Services.

GRANTSVILLE — Gloria Martin, town clerk and treasurer of Grantsville, is retiring after seeing eight mayors enter office, a myriad of changes and 44 years of service to the town.

“There is going to be some nostalgic moments, but it’s time to go,” said Martin, who is approaching 76. “I enjoyed the job and loved the people. I had really good people to work with.”

Mayor Paul Edwards said Martin is “very knowledgeable on the town,” helped to mentor him and was instrumental in getting him to the place he is today.

Laurie Locascio, NIST Director

A native of Cumberland, Dr. Laurie Locascio graduated from and was the 1979 Science Award Winner at Bishop Walsh High School. She earned her undergraduate degree in chemistry from James Madison University, her masters in bioengineering from the University of Utah and her doctorate in toxicology from the University of Maryland Baltimore.

Ora Mae (Robertson) Lewis, 1919-2013

The following is excerpted from an obituary appearing in the December 21, 2013 edition of the Cumberland Times-News:

Ora Mae Lewis graduated from Allegany High School, class of 1937 where she played varsity basketball. She graduated from Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing in 1940. As a young nurse she worked in the operating room at Sibley Hospital in Washington, D.C. She was there when World War II was declared in 1941. The following year she married William Charles Lewis of Frostburg.

Cherie Krug, Garrett College Foundation

Cherie Krug is Executive Director of the Garrett College Foundation. She had earlier overseen the AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA Programs at Frostburg State University. The following excerpts are from an April 2016 Garrett College press release pertaining to Krug's being named among Maryland's top 100 women for 2016:

Evelyn Ruth Kauffman, 1918-2012
"The Queen of Baltimore Street"

Evelyn Kauffman was a long-time businesswoman in downtown Cumberland. Along with her late husband, Harry, Evelyn owned and operated the Cumberland Cloak & Suit Store, where she served as the manager of the children's department until 1981. The Cumberland Cloak & Suit Store had been originally established on Baltimore Street in 1927 by Jack Kauffman, the store's founder.

Florence Carmel Indolfi, 1920-2015

Florence Indolfi was born in Caulonia, Calabria, Italy. For many years she and her husband (Ralph) owned and managed the George Street Cleaners in downtown Cumberland. As the 1973 photograph above depicts, the business was located directly across the street from the Ramada (former Holiday Inn.) The Center City Parking Garage now stands on the site of the former cleaning operation. The Cumberland City Directory from 1956 identifies the address as 101 South George Street, and Florence Indolfi as the firm's Secretary-Treasurer.

Betsey Hurwitz-Schwab

Betsey Hurwitz-Schwab came to Cumberland in 1978 as a social work graduate student through the Area Health Education Program (AHEC). She met Doug Schwab that year and, as a result, has been here ever since.
