Jane Paige Gates, 73, of Cumberland, passed away on Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at her residence.

Born Nov. 8, 1930, Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Julian Gates Sr., and Sylvia Virginia (Stephens) Gates. Miss Gates was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence J. Gates Jr. and Bruce E. Gates; a sister, Carolyn V. Nimmons; and a niece, Tammi N. Allen, whom she helped rear.

— WAYNE, N.J. — Henry Louis Gates Sr., 97, formerly a resident of Cumberland and Piedmont, W.Va., died peacefully on Christmas Eve, 2010, in Wayne, at home with his family gathered at his bedside. After living in Lexington, Mass., following the death of his wife, Mr. Gates had resided for the past several years at the home of his older son, Dr. Paul Gates.

My wife and I were privileged to have met and talked with her several times while she was visiting the family homestead on Greene Street

Born Jan. 22, 1917, in Cumberland, Mrs. Franklin was the daughter of the late Charles Leo Denson and Gottie Violet (Gilmore) Denson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Hubert Franklin Sr.

He was born June 4, 1947, the son of the late Arnold Lee Fields and Elsie Mae Taylor Fields. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a son, Corey Bartlett.

CUMBERLAND — Garland Hopewell Darr, 95, of Cumberland, passed away on Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at the WMHS Memorial Campus Hospital.

Born Oct. 18,1908, Cumberland, he was the son of the late Edward Arlington Darr and Vernetta (Page) Darr. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel A. Darr, 1993; and four brothers, James Darr, Elmer Darr, John Darr, and Nial Darr; and two sisters, Vernetta (Darr) Jones and Marian Darr. Mr. Darr is the last surviving member of his immediate family.
