Thirty Dollars Reward

RAN away from the subscriber, in Anne Arundel county, near Ellicott’s Mills, BOB, a country born, young negro man, about twenty years of age, rather yellowish, about five feet 8 or 9 inches high, slender made, stoops in his walk, much given to blush, and is very compliant, he was bred a waiter to Major Yates; had on a blue half worn coat, striped jacket, buckskin breeches, white stockings, half boots, ruffled shirt, and a high crowned hat.

The Purchase of Pembroke.

Stephen Pembroke, the slave of Jacob H. Grove, Esq. of Sharpsburg, was purchased from his master last week for the sum of $1000, and taken back to New York. The money was raised through the efforts of Pembroke’s brother, who is a Clergyman of some standing among the colored folks of New York. Pembroke’s two sons, the property of Capt. David Smith, of Sharpsburg, were sold to a lumber merchant in North Carolina, and are now employed in a cypress shingle factory.

A Slave Stampede.
Two female slaves belonging to Mr. Wm. HEYSER, one to Mr. JOSEPH RENCH, one to Mr. HENRY K. TICE, and one male slave to Mr. JOHN BOOTH, citizens of this town and vicinity, absconded to Pennsylvania on Sunday night last They took with them a horse of Dr. E. WEIS, a horse of Mr. HENRY K. TICE, a carriage of Mr. F. J. POSEY, and a buggy of Mr. JOSEPH P. MONG. On Monday the horses and vehicles were recovered at Chambersburg, the slaves having taken the cars for Harrisburg.

ARRESTED. – A negro man belonging to Dr. Wilson was arrested on Thursday last and brought before Squire Harding charged with an attempt to perpetrate a shocking outrage upon a Miss Hafer, a respectable white girl of some fifteen years of age. He denied the charge, but the girl testified positively to his identity, and he was held to answer at court in the sum of $500. - Frederick (Md.) Citizen.

Runaway Negroes.

We have been informed that a batch of 6 or 8 slaves belonging to Mr. Elias Cheney, of Funkstown, has been missing since Sunday last, and are supposed to have decamped for the good old Democratic Land of Penn. In reference to runaway negroes, we find the following melancholy item of information in the last Williamsport Times:
“Last week we stated that a negro man had been drowned, some distance below Dam No. 6, and yesterday, (Friday,) another negro man was found drowned, near "Duck Island," about 1 ½ miles above town.

On Monday of last week four fugitive slaves from the neighborhood of Cumberland, Md, arrived at Altoona, Pa., pursued by their claimant. Two of them were arrested and taken to Hollidaysburg, where they were committed to jail on the charge of stealing a horse. A writ of habeas corpus, however, was immediately issued, and the charge not… they were discharged and hurried off by a mob of … the court-house.
